Pioneering Financial Awareness in Youth: Smart Money MI Kids Read Initiative

May 30, 2024

Overview of Smart Money MI Kids Read Program

April marks the rollout of the Smart Money MI Kids Read, a financial literacy program driven by the Michigan Financial Wellness Network with exclusive funding from the Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF). Since 2014, this initiative has been uniquely supported by credit unions across Michigan, demonstrating their commitment to fostering financial awareness from a young age. During National Financial Capability Month and Michigan Financial Literacy Month, children’s books emphasizing financial literacy are distributed across Michigan’s public libraries, making financial education accessible to the youth statewide.

Michigan Credit Unions’ Role in Promoting Financial Education

The program’s cornerstone is its partnership with local libraries where financial literacy sessions are conducted, featuring the year’s chosen book, Owl + Otter and the Big Talent Show. This book follows the journey of woodland characters as they explore fundamental financial concepts like earning, saving, spending, and sharing. Andrea Tucker, MCUF’s Executive Director, highlights that financial literacy is crucial for lifelong resilience and stability, and through this initiative, Michigan credit unions aim to embed vital financial knowledge in young minds.

Impact and Reach of the Initiative

In 2024, the Smart Money MI Kids Read initiative plans to distribute 16,000 books across Michigan. A significant portion of these books will be handed out at public library events designed to engage children in fun, educational activities centered around money management. Libraries across 61 counties are participating, with many collaborating directly with local credit unions to enrich these events. This initiative not only educates children but also strengthens community ties by using storytelling to teach essential financial skills.

By infusing financial education into engaging storytime experiences, the Smart Money MI Kids Read initiative creates a foundational understanding of money management among Michigan’s youngest citizens. This proactive approach in early education ensures that children grow up with the knowledge necessary to make informed financial decisions, setting the stage for a financially aware generation.
