Governor Phil Scott Recognizes Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Week
On Tuesday afternoon in Montpelier, Governor Phil Scott signed a proclamation declaring this week as Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Week. He also announced a groundbreaking partnership between several organizations aimed at assisting sexual assault survivors through financial literacy education. “Financial dependency is often a tool abusers use to maintain control over their partners,” noted Vermont Treasurer Mike Pieciak.
Addressing Financial Barriers for Survivors
The state of Vermont spends approximately $100 million annually on sexual violence cases. According to Pieciak, “85% of women who leave an abusive relationship return due to economic dependence on their abuser.” Financial barriers often trap individuals in abusive situations, making it crucial to address this issue. Ari Medard, an advocate from Circle Vermont, highlighted various forms of financial abuse, such as restricting employment or controlling financial resources.
Empowering Survivors Through Financial Education
A new initiative, born from a collaboration between the Treasurer’s Office, the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, and M&T Bank, seeks to support survivors through empowerment training and credit-building opportunities. Karen Tronsgard-Scott, director of the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, stated, “This initiative aims to provide survivors with the tools they need to heal, recover, and ultimately thrive after abuse.” Advocates underscore the program’s importance, with Menard noting the frequent need to help clients improve their credit scores to secure housing and loans.
Community Support and Program Launch
M&T Bank has committed $100,000 over four years to fund the program. All parties involved hope that raising awareness and demonstrating available support will encourage more survivors to come forward. “Anything we can do to highlight this issue and support survivors is crucial. We all need to work together to put an end to this,” emphasized Governor Scott. The program is scheduled to launch in March.
