Origin and Mission of the LIFE Initiative
In a collaborative effort to address gaps in financial education, two seniors from Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, NY, and a Greeley alumnus now studying finance at Cornell University’s Dyson School of Applied Economics & Management established The LIFE (Literacy in Finance and Economics) Initiative. This non-governmental organization (NGO) is dedicated to enhancing financial literacy within historically underserved and underrepresented communities. Despite its humble beginnings, LIFE has quickly expanded its influence, making significant strides on a global scale in financial education.
Expanding Educational Reach and Enhancing Financial Confidence
The LIFE Initiative was inspired by a stark interest among teens in investing and personal finance, juxtaposed with a widespread lack of confidence and knowledge. By providing comprehensive online resources and in-person workshops, LIFE aims to educate a diverse audience—from young children learning about money to adults inexperienced in personal finance. The initiative’s website, thelifeinit.org, offers key educational materials and registration for the LIFE Newsletter, keeping subscribers informed about vital financial and economic updates.
Impact and Future Directions
With a growing network of over 51 ambassadors, the LIFE Initiative actively delivers presentations and workshops in various local settings, such as libraries and Boys & Girls Clubs across the U.S. These efforts are geared towards making financial education relatable and accessible, particularly for the youth. Looking forward, LIFE is expanding internationally and exploring partnerships that enhance their educational offerings, such as with the Lincoln Method for education technology. The initiative’s ongoing collaboration with state legislators and international bodies underscores its commitment to embedding financial literacy into educational systems globally, ensuring that future generations are well-equipped to achieve their own versions of success.
