So tell us, what’s new?

imageThe Hip Hop FinFest song competition is open for submissions until April 30th! Middle and High school students are invited to create a song about the financial topics most important to them for a chance to win over $5000 in prizes!

This year’s theme is Mic Check, Mind Check, Money Check.

🎤: The mic for the students to use music as a way to tell us their best financially-focused stories!

💭 + 💰: The mind and money because the connection between our mental health and emotions are vital. If we can understand our feelings, we can make better decisions about living well today while saving for the future!

What’s the impact this has had/or you hope it will have on moving financial literacy forward?

The Hip-Hop FinFest brings students, families, and educators together through online learning challenges, a student song competition, and a community concert. Pockets Change is partnering with Here For Good Texas & Morphing Minds to host this year’s Hip Hop FinFest, with incredible support from Sony, Texas Financial Education Endowment, California Jump$tart, Fulton Bank, and many more! Together, we can transform lives and communities, one financial conversation at a time.

FinFest changed my life, in that I learned more about finance and the history of the racial wealth gap and generational wealth building over time. It also created a point in my resume that piques interest. Before Pockets Change, I never cared much about financial literacy. Through this I learned more about the importance of financial literacy and have grown as I went. I have so much fun learning and creating at the same time.

Pockets Change provides curriculum, workshops, and professional development to build financial resilience through Hip-Hop pedagogy. By connecting Hip-Hop and finance, we develop an understanding of ourselves and our relationship with money. Our programs support youth in taking agency in their personal financial decisions through peer conversations, unpacking systems, developing habits, identifying personal values, and advocating for what they want now and in the future.
