Launch of Smart Money MI Kids Read Program

April marks a significant stride in financial literacy for Michigan’s younger generation with the launch of Smart Money MI Kids Read. Sponsored by the Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF), this initiative is dedicated to promoting financial wellness through engaging children’s literature. Michigan’s public libraries distribute these educational books, focusing on financial concepts during April, recognized both as National Financial Capability Month and Michigan Financial Literacy Month.

Empowering Financial Literacy Through Engaging Storytelling

This year’s feature, Owl + Otter and the Big Talent Show, weaves lessons on earning, saving, spending, and sharing money into a charming narrative about forest creatures. These stories not only entertain but educate, helping young readers grasp basic financial concepts through relatable scenarios and characters. Andrea Tucker, MCUF Executive Director, emphasizes the importance of financial literacy from an early age, noting that such knowledge fosters resilience and well-being throughout one’s life.

Extensive Reach and Community Engagement

In 2024, the program expects to distribute 16,000 books across Michigan, with 9,000 provided during children’s events at public libraries and an additional 7,000 through community and school activities hosted by 35 credit unions. The collaboration extends to 56 credit unions partnering with libraries to facilitate these events, underscoring the strong community focus of Michigan’s credit unions. Kelly Masters, Founder of the Michigan Financial Wellness Network, praises the program for its comprehensive outreach, engaging thousands of children through interactive storytimes and activities designed to make learning about money management fun and accessible.

Additional Resources and Broader Impact

The Smart Money MI Kids Read initiative is part of a broader effort by Michigan credit unions to enhance community well-being through financial education. These institutions, together with the MCUF and the Michigan Financial Wellness Network, provide invaluable resources and support to families across the state, ensuring that financial education is accessible to all. With activities ranging from coloring sheets to crafts that complement the storytelling, the program not only educates but also actively engages the community in fostering financial literacy from an early age.
