Elevating Diverse Entrepreneurs through Innovative Collaboration
Earlier this month, CU Denver’s Smart Futures Lab marked a significant milestone as eleven diverse-led companies graduated from its program, celebrating the culmination of their innovative journey at the University of Colorado Denver. This initiative is a partnership among CU Denver’s College of Engineering, Design and Computing, Colorado Smart Cities Alliance, and Innosphere Ventures, aimed at integrating underrepresented entrepreneurs in technology and city planning. Throughout the program, these companies gained access to cutting-edge workspaces, valuable networking opportunities, and a variety of educational workshops aimed at enhancing their business operations.
Real-World Impact and Future Directions
The graduates from the Smart Futures Lab have effectively utilized their industry connections and the program’s comprehensive curriculum to scale their businesses and implement practical solutions to urban challenges. For instance, InCitu, one of the standout participants, utilized augmented reality to create interactive maps, including a notable project that developed a navigable map of Washington, D.C., showcasing landmarks like the Frank D. Reeves Municipal Building. This and other projects across cities like San Francisco and Charleston illustrate the tangible impacts these companies are making in urban innovation and civic engagement.
A Gateway to Civic Innovation and Community Improvement
CU Denver’s Smart Futures Lab serves not only as a business accelerator but also as an incubator designed to foster civic innovation, supported by a $2 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. The participating companies are addressing critical societal issues such as transportation safety, mobility for people with disabilities, and climate change adaptation, showcasing the profound influence of technology on improving community life. With personalized mentorship and continuous support from industry leaders, these companies are well-positioned to continue their trajectory towards making significant contributions to cities in Colorado and beyond.
