Reno lawyer launches streaming service with original content

A longtime local lawyer and personal finance author has launched a new streaming service in Reno that aims to become a hub for content lovers, independent artists and financial education for young people.

Garrett Sutton, 70, debuted the Sunn Stream streaming service in December after a decades-long career that includes founding Reno-based firms and touring South America with best-selling personal finance writer Robert Kiyosaki, author of “Rich Dad Poor Dad,” to promote his own books on entrepreneurship and investing.

Before launching SunnStream, Garrett Sutton had a prolific career as a lawyer and personal finance author.

The streaming service, which aims to elevate the work of independent filmmakers, includes both original and licensed content, such as movies, documentaries and music-related content. Beyond that, Sunn Stream hopes to create a content niche for kids’ financial literacy, outdoor adventure and personal development.

Sunn Stream recently launched the exclusive premiere of “The Cream Acoustic Sessions,” a documentary following the final album recording of Eric Clapton’s former band. Other original content in the works includes documentaries “Symphony of the Holocaust,” about a child prodigy violinist who survived the Holocaust, and “Max Patkin,” a film about the clown prince of baseball.

Sutton says Sunn Stream won’t host any AI-generated content on its platform and has launched the nonprofit foundation Brain Freedom Fund to direct 15% of net profits to supporting independent filmmakers creating art without the help of AI.

The Sunn Stream headquarters neighbors Sutton’s other companies at 348 Mill St., which include Sutton Law Center and Corporate Direct. The new venture marks a return to Sutton’s early passion for film.

“In high school, everyone made movies,” Sutton said. “Then we all had to get responsible and go to law school.”

Sutton, who moved to Reno in 1989 for his law career, hopes that Sunn Stream will become a go-to place for financial literacy resources, especially for children in North and South America.

“It’s fun to be working on these stories and providing financial education for kids,” Sutton said. “That’s so important.”

Sunn Stream is available via a $5.99 monthly or $59.99 yearly subscription fee. Sunn Stream does not yet have a dedicated app to stream content on mobile devices, but subscribers can browse and watch all of the content online on the Sunn Stream website.
