When people in programs designed to help them recover from stress need to take a break, they now have something positive to look forward to.
At the Austin Street Shelter in Dallas, members of the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas constructed the first-ever “she shed” for the Sisterhood program.
The Sisterhood program serves women who have experienced stress leading to unemployment. Through professional assistance and training, they gain the ability to change, learn to trust again and build confidence to start anew.
The Sisterhood Program provides comprehensive support through case management, classes, training, counseling, peer support, and help with finding housing. All members are required to attend group classes, which cover topics such as physical and mental health, anger management, addiction recovery, financial literacy, and conflict resolution.
The “she shed” offers women enrolled in the classes a place to take a break, relax, and enjoy some fresh air. Previously, the only space available was akin to an open-air carport.
In addition to the “she shed,” the Apartment Association also donated $7,000 to the Sisterhood program.
Through its wide-ranging support, including case management, classes, training, counseling, peer support, and housing assistance, the Sisterhood Program equips individuals with the tools they need to rebuild their lives. The comprehensive curriculum addresses important issues like physical and mental health, anger management, addiction recovery, financial literacy, and conflict resolution.
