Promoting Financial Literacy Among Nigerian Students

During the 2024 Global Money Week (GMW), Mr. Jude Chiemeka, the acting CEO of the Nigerian Exchange Ltd. (NGX), called on Nigerian students to cultivate financial literacy as a key life skill. The event, jointly organized by the NGX, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and other capital market operators in Lagos, aimed to instill a solid financial foundation among young students. Chiemeka highlighted the critical role of financial education in shaping the future trajectory and quality of their lives.

Strategic Financial Education Initiatives

The symposium underscored the commitment of Nigerian financial institutions to foster a generation capable of making informed financial choices. Mr. Lanre Gbadamosi from the Consumer Protection section of the Central Bank of Nigeria introduced the Sabi Money Platform, designed to enhance financial literacy among students by offering comprehensive educational resources. Chinwe Egwim, Chief Economist at Coronation Merchant Bank, further engaged students on the implications of economic conditions on personal finance, emphasizing the importance of proactive financial planning and investment.

Building a Financially Savvy Future

The discussions at the GMW symposium stressed the importance of early investment habits and the advantages of understanding compound interest, as highlighted by Adaora Obikili from Chapel Hill Denham. Onome Komolafe of the Central Securities and Clearing System elucidated the pivotal role of securities and clearing in ensuring the safety and efficiency of market transactions. The event, themed “Protect Your Funds, Secure Your Future,” was a concerted effort by leading financial entities to arm the youth with essential financial knowledge and skills, marking a significant stride towards economic empowerment and sustainability for the next generation.
