Innovative Approach to Financial Education at Agnes Scott College
Agnes Scott College, located in Decatur, Georgia, is pioneering an inventive approach to financial education by integrating musical theater into learning experiences for children. Recently awarded a research grant by the National Endowment for the Arts, the college plans to explore how a musical theater production can influence elementary school students’ understanding of financial concepts. This study, led by Theater Professor Toby Emert, aims to turn a creative idea into an educational tool that makes learning about finances engaging and accessible.
Musical Theater as a Medium for Teaching Financial Literacy
The inspiration for this unique project came from “Million Bazillion,” a podcast by American Public Media’s Marketplace, which aims to enhance economic understanding. Professor Emert, captivated by the podcast, envisioned a musical that could teach young audiences about money management and economic principles in a fun and interactive manner. Alongside psychology professor Bonnie Perdue, Emert has crafted a study to assess how effectively the musical conveys its financial lessons compared to traditional classroom methods.
Premiere and Expectations
The musical, titled “Million Bazillion: the Musical,” will debut at the Winter Theater on Agnes Scott’s campus with several performances scheduled to cater exclusively to local students and the general public. Set against a backdrop of catchy tunes like “Dollar Scholar,” the show is designed to foster financial curiosity and literacy among young viewers. With songs that reinforce key financial lessons, the production aims to instill a foundational understanding of money matters in an entertaining format, ensuring that children not only enjoy the performance but also absorb valuable life skills.
