PenFed continues to make investments in Puerto Rico’s future by offering financial knowledge to over 4,000 individuals in public and private schools.
PenFed Credit Union and EVERFI from Blackbaud hosted an engaging learning event focused on improving fiscal education for over 110 students in grades 9-12 at Escuela Superior Rafael Cordero Molina in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on March 20. The students recently completed the “Tu Dinero, Tu Sueño” (“Your Money, Your Dreams”) program, a scalable digital financial education curriculum provided by PenFed through a strategic partnership with EVERFI, the leader in powering social impact through education.
According to PenFed Executive Vice President of Member Operations and Global Fixed Assets, Jamie Gayton, “PenFed believes that the best way to provide Puerto Rico is to remain empower the next generation to realize their financial goals.” We are grateful for the support of EVERFI and Escuela Superior Rafael Cordero Molina as we promote economic education and inspire students to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
Over 4,000 public and private K-12 school pupils in 39 Puerto Rico are receiving important financial instruction from PenFed and EVERFI in a strategic partnership that has been ongoing for the past five years, free of charge. PenFed gives kids exposure to EVERFI’s proven education, which teaches them how to make wise financial decisions and achieve success in life. The plan teaches kids about savings and monitoring, building and maintaining good credit, planning for big purchases, investing and pension, and funding higher education.
PenFed leaders, including PenFed financial facility managers, money managers, and mortgage professionals participated in a “speed networking” activity with kids who just completed the EVERFI economic education program. In little group discussions relating to the crucial skills taught in the curriculum, students had the opportunity to ask questions of PenFed officials and community volunteers during the activity.
The third time PenFed and EVERFI have held an occasion in Puerto Rico this year, they have held the financial literacy event. In the past, PenFed has held activities at San Juan’s public and private schools.
Following these activities, PenFed announced two students were awarded a scholarship in the amount of $1,250 in recognition of their work throughout the Tu Dinero, Tu Sueño program.
“PenFed has made a long-term investment in improving the financial literacy of students in Puerto Rico,” said Ray Martinez, the president and co-founder of Blackbaud. The San Juan students who took part in this system are extremely talented, and the stories they told about the impact they wanted to have on society were nothing less than encouraging. We are pleased to partner with PenFed to provide this knowledge to such needy students and to assist them in achieving their goals.
With its San Juan, Hatillo, Ponce, Mayaguez, and United States Army Garrison Fort Buchanan branches, PenFed now serves its people in Puerto Rico. In Guaynabo, PenFed opened a Bilingual Service Center in 2022.
