Introduction
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) – Girls Inc. of Columbus hosted their annual community clothing drive on Thursday, providing girls with winter wardrobe essentials. Even though the clothing was free, participants practiced budgeting as part of their financial education.
Learning Through Shopping
The clothing drive offered a unique opportunity for financial education, thanks to the partnership with Synovus and other community supporters. Cassie Higgins, the promotion and development officer for Girls Inc. of Columbus, explained that the girls were given “Bucks” to shop with, simulating real-life budgeting. This hands-on experience allowed them to apply financial literacy skills in a practical setting.
Community Support and Impact
Generous donations from Synovus, Columbus State University, The Photoshop Museum, LDJ Fitness, and Maxx Fitness made the event possible. As the holiday season and colder weather approached, Higgins highlighted the perfect timing for this event. “This is an excellent chance to equip our girls with the necessary winter clothing while reinforcing their financial education,” she said.
Building Financial Skills
Joi Turner, a fourth-grader who has been with Girls Inc. since first grade, shared how the shopping experience improved her financial literacy. “I knew how to count money, but now I’m even better at it,” Turner remarked. Some girls, like second-grader Everly Williams, used their Bucks to shop for others, demonstrating the spirit of giving.
Giving Back to the Community
Items that weren’t selected by the girls will be returned to the community that supported the drive. “By the end of this event, over 300 girls will have had the opportunity to shop,” Higgins noted. “Any leftover items will be distributed to other local organizations in need.”
Upcoming Events and Fundraisers
Girls Inc. has several upcoming events to engage the community and raise funds. “We have a Boston Butt Sale at our Baker Center, with the last day to order being Sunday,” Higgins mentioned. Additionally, the Big Dog Jingle 5k will take place on Saturday, December 16, with registration available online.
How to Support Girls Inc.
There are numerous ways to support Girls Inc., from volunteering to participating in fundraisers. “You can support us with your time, donations, or by joining one of our events,” Higgins said. For more information on how to get involved, visit the Girls Inc. website.
