Chennai: As the Madras School of Economics (MSE) prepares to launch two new MS degree programs in data science and computational finance from the upcoming academic year (2024–25), students with any degree and an interest in mathematics will be able to study these subjects there.
In the two-year graduate mathematical finance course, students will delve into financial concepts and computer applications. To enroll in these programs, individuals are required to pass an entrance exam.
The data science course will cover contemporary topics in machine learning, advanced artificial intelligence, and programming languages like Python. Additionally, students will study fundamental economic theories and their applications in mathematical finance, including stock market data analysis and investments, as explained by K R Shanmugam, Director of MSE.
Currently, MSE offers five MA degrees in applied statistical finance, actuarial economics, general economics, and financial economics, along with graduate diplomas in control programs. With an average annual income of 15 million, the university, ranking second only to the Delhi School of Economics, boasts nearly 100% placement for its postgraduate students. As part of its growth strategy, the university plans to transition its PGDM program into an MBA program and intends to introduce a BBA course following the success of the BA economics (honors) degree.
In the first two years of the BA program, there are 118 students, with approximately 50% of them hailing from Tamil Nadu. MSE has reserved 35% of seats in each program for Tamil Nadu residents. As many as 118 students who completed the program will receive their degrees during MSE’s inaugural commencement on December 2.
MSE has been offering degrees in partnership with the Central University of Tamil Nadu.
