Discussion teaser, a lack of NOPD officers, and school-based financial literacy instruction

May 19, 2024

The majority of New Orleanians are aware of the city’s police officer deficit, which has resulted in lengthy wait times and negative economic effects. According to numerous reports, the town only has about 500 officers, or about a third of its perfect force.

Lots of neighborhood nonprofits, political organizations, and businesses make up the NOLA Coalition, which is researching ways to reduce violence in the area while gathering data on the officer shortage. The government’s CEO, Michael Hecht, and Jeff Asher, co-founder of AH Datalytics, a company that has been examining the primary causes and effects of the officer shortage, join us.

Louisiana’s government mandated in 2019 that personal financial management, including lessons on loans, mortgage payment, and defaulting, become taught in public high schools. According to the students’ responses, it didn’t sound like much fun.

Enter three University of New Orleans professors who want to make sure high school students are financially literate and who have a $2 million grant. Chris Surprenant, a professor of morality, approach, and public policy, joins us to talk about the brand-new Dollars to Memories plan, which aims to engage students in the process of achieving financial objectives.

But second, it’s Thursday, so Stephanie Grace, editorial director and columnist for The Advocate, needs to catch up on this political week with The Times- Picayune. We discuss other significant state elections while previewing the future presidential debate, which will for the first time feature the race’s presumed trailblazer Republican Attorney General Jeff Landry.
