Inspiring Students Beyond the Classroom

Grand Rapids — Nicole Shilton, a dedicated math teacher at C.A. Frost Middle High, has made it her mission to ensure students not only learn but truly understand complex concepts, from basic circuitry to the intriguing fractals of the Mandelbrot set. With 28 years of experience in Grand Rapids Public Schools and now in her ninth year at C.A. Frost, she teaches Algebra II, financial literacy, and a college math readiness course. Shilton’s approach is about building confidence and fostering a deep understanding of the material.

“My goal is not just to cover the content but to help students believe in themselves,” says Shilton, reflecting her commitment to nurturing student growth. This dedication earned her the Jean Hamilton Cope Teacher of the Year award in October, highlighting her compassionate and effective teaching style. Senior Ziigwaan Chavez describes her as caring, likening her to a mother figure, while junior Syncere Washington appreciates her patient, inclusive teaching methods.

Cultivating a Growth Mindset and Connection

Shilton is renowned for her ability to relate to students individually, adapting her teaching to meet their unique needs and learning styles. “Developing that growth mindset is essential,” she says, emphasizing the importance of personalized education. Senior Jayla Davis, who nominated Shilton for the Jean Hamilton Cope award, values the personal connection and engaging teaching methods that Shilton brings to the classroom.

Shilton’s classes are known for their balance of structure and flexibility, allowing room for fun and spontaneous learning while ensuring that every student is engaged and understanding the material. “It’s just knowing the students,” Shilton explains. Her success is evident in the low failure rates in her classes, as she persistently works with each student to help them succeed. As a senior class adviser and mentor to new teachers like Zac Ford, Shilton continues to inspire both students and colleagues with her dedication and positive outlook.
