Introduction to Financial Literacy
As adults, we make numerous financial decisions daily. However, for children, understanding finances can be challenging and is often not adequately addressed in schools. This gap inspired two Palm Beach County students to help their peers start learning about financial literacy early.
The Founding of WeeklyTheta
Juniors Tommaso Sini and Anthony Viverito from The Benjamin School in Palm Beach Gardens noticed a lack of basic finance education at their school. Motivated by their passion for the subject, they co-founded the “WeeklyTheta” organization in August 2022 to educate others eager to learn about finance.
WeeklyTheta simplifies complex topics like compound interest, stocks, credit, and investing, making them easy to understand. “Learning about compound interest early on gives you a significant advantage later in life,” said Tommaso. Through daily newsletters, a YouTube channel, and weekend tutoring programs, they provide accessible financial education.
Impact and Expansion
Tommaso and Anthony found that their classmates were keen to learn about these topics but struggled to understand them. They believe that financial literacy is a crucial skill that should be taught early to prepare for adulthood. “Understanding the economy’s ties to global events is essential for adult life,” Tommaso explained.
Anthony added, “Our goal is to lower the barriers to financial literacy, allowing anyone to gain the necessary tools early on. The earlier you start, the better.” Initially targeting their school, they realized that everyone could benefit from their resources if they were willing to learn. They aim to expand WeeklyTheta’s reach from Palm Beach County to a national and even global audience.
Growing Influence
WeeklyTheta’s impact is evident, with their YouTube videos garnering over ten thousand views. This success shows that they are not only helping local students but also educating thousands of people worldwide. Tommaso and Anthony’s initiative demonstrates the importance of accessible financial education and the difference it can make in people’s lives.
