Journey to Financial Literacy: A Fairmont State Alumnus’ Mission

Danijel Velicki, once an international student from Croatia at Fairmont State University, has launched a groundbreaking financial literacy program set to be introduced to incoming freshmen in 2024. Velicki’s journey, beginning in 1995 as a newcomer adapting to life in West Virginia, highlighted the challenges many face with financial management, especially in their formative years. His experiences of financial missteps, such as mishandling credit cards and overlooking the importance of savings, inspired him to create a solution that could prevent similar difficulties for others.

Empowering Students with Practical Financial Knowledge

Recognizing the lack of fundamental financial education among students, Velicki developed “Higher Ed,” an engaging online course designed to demystify financial concepts through interactive modules. The program, which integrates games like “Credit Where it’s Due” and “Salary Ain’t Everything,” offers students a user-friendly and practical approach to understanding finances. Scheduled to debut at Fairmont State in January 2024, the course covers a wide range of topics from budgeting to long-term financial planning, aiming to equip students with the skills necessary to navigate their financial futures successfully.

This initiative not only reflects Velicki’s commitment to enhancing financial awareness among the youth but also stands as a testament to his personal and professional growth—from a young student grappling with financial challenges to the CEO of a financial education company. Velicki’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of education and the potential of every individual to overcome obstacles and achieve great success.
