Empowering Independence through Literacy
A groundbreaking partnership between the DBS Foundation and SG Enable is set to enhance the financial and digital literacy of around 6,500 individuals with disabilities and their caregivers in Singapore. This initiative will focus on crucial skills like online banking and fraud prevention, aiming to foster greater independence and open up more social and economic opportunities for participants. The program is supported by a generous $1 million grant from the DBS Foundation and is scheduled to begin in 2024.
Tailored Educational Programs for Diverse Needs
As revealed in feedback from focus groups organized by SG Enable, there is a significant gap in the current educational offerings regarding essential digital and financial literacy. Responding to this need, the new curriculum will be specifically designed to address various learning preferences and will include up to 30 distinct modules. These modules will cover essential financial concepts such as budgeting, cash management, and insurance, alongside digital skills like online security, ensuring comprehensive educational coverage.
Inclusive Learning and Support Framework
Recognizing the diverse needs within the disabled community, the program will offer flexible learning options, including e-modules and in-person workshops, strategically located to be easily accessible. Additionally, caregivers, who may also lack these critical skills, are encouraged to participate in the training sessions. To further support the learning process, DBS Foundation and SG Enable plan to develop resource guides and toolkits for trainers, caregivers, and special education schools to equip them better to assist learners. This initiative was officially launched by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and is expected to make a significant impact on the community by providing vital skills and knowledge to those who need them most.
