Transforming Libraries into Financial Literacy Hubs
On a recent visit to the Cleve J. Fredricksen Library, Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor highlighted the Pennsylvania Library Association’s (PaLA) PA Forward® Initiative, a dynamic program aimed at bolstering essential literacies among Pennsylvanians to foster personal and community growth. Initiated to encompass five key literacy areas—Basic, Information, Civic and Social, Health, and Financial—this initiative leverages libraries as pivotal resources in community education. DeFoor emphasized, “Libraries extend beyond mere repositories of books; they are vital centers for free access to a comprehensive range of educational resources, especially in financial literacy, which is crucial for the state’s prosperity.”
Libraries at the Forefront of Financial Education
Since its inception in 1901, the Pennsylvania Library Association has significantly contributed to the professional and personal development of its over 1,200 members across various libraries. Introduced in 2009, the PA Forward® Initiative champions the idea that ‘Literacy is POWER. Libraries provide the fuel,’ aiming to equip Pennsylvanians with the necessary skills to thrive in the 21st century. Christi Buker, the Executive Director of PaLA, stated, “Our initiative ensures that Pennsylvanians develop essential literacy skills, particularly financial literacy, through targeted programs and resources available at our libraries, making the acquisition of a library card a financially astute decision for individuals and families.”
Promoting Financial Independence Through Community Engagement
Auditor General DeFoor’s commitment to fostering financial literacy across Pennsylvania is evident in his ongoing Be Money Smart initiative. This comprehensive campaign not only raises awareness about the importance of financial literacy but also equips residents with practical tools for financial independence. Highlighting the lifelong benefits of financial knowledge, DeFoor remarked, “Understanding how to manage your finances is crucial, regardless of age. It’s a vital life skill.” His efforts include a statewide financial literacy tour, collaborations with educational and financial institutions, and interactive community programs designed to build a financially savvy future generation in Pennsylvania.
