Recognizing Financial Literacy Leaders
Two MSU College of Social Science students, Maddie Shlaimoon and Tushar Thakur, have been honored with the Go for the Green Paul Pradel Financial Literacy Ambassador Scholarship. Each student received $1,500 for their impactful social media campaign promoting financial literacy and highlighting MSU’s related initiatives. Their dedication represents a significant push to advance financial education within the university.
Enhancing Student Financial Education
Shlaimoon, a junior focusing on human capital and society, is driven to improve financial literacy among her peers. “This scholarship has inspired me to make our campaign a reality,” she shared, emphasizing the role of financial education in student success. Thakur, an economics sophomore, echoed this sentiment, noting how the award has bolstered his academic and community involvement.
The Value of Financial Literacy
Understanding personal finances, including budgeting, student loans, and investing, is crucial for financial well-being. Paul Pradel, the scholarship’s benefactor and an MSU alumnus, highlights the importance of establishing good financial habits early. His commitment to financial education is evident in his work as a financial planner and his ongoing support for MSU students.
Expanding Financial Literacy at MSU
Dr. Erica Tobe and Dr. Amanda Guinot-Talbot have played key roles in broadening financial literacy education at MSU. Their course, HDFS 238 – Introduction to Personal Finance, has grown significantly and now offers multiple sections each semester. Collaborating with campus partners, they aim to embed financial literacy into various student activities, reaching a wider audience.
Building a Financially Informed Student Community
The MSU College of Social Science is dedicated to improving students’ financial health, especially as many face substantial student debt. Through courses like HDFS 138 – Introduction to Financial Literacy, the college provides essential financial education to undergraduates. Looking ahead, the college plans to extend its impact through continued collaborations and philanthropic efforts, ensuring all students are equipped for financial success.
