Wisconsin Expands Safe Haven Laws and Financial Literacy Education

Governor Tony Evers recently approved a series of bills that have significant implications for Wisconsin’s residents, including enhancements to the Safe Haven laws and the introduction of financial literacy in schools. Under the new legislation, Wisconsin will see the installation of “newborn safety devices” across hospitals, police stations, and fire stations, allowing parents to leave their newborns anonymously and safely. This measure, known as Wisconsin Act 79, aims to provide a secure option for parents and protect infants from potential harm.

Strengthening Financial Preparedness Among Students

In an effort to equip young Wisconsinites with essential financial skills, Governor Evers signed Assembly Bill 109, now known as Wisconsin Act 60. Starting with the class of 2028, this initiative mandates that students must complete a minimum of 0.5 credits in personal financial literacy to graduate. The governor emphasized that this educational requirement is crucial for preparing students to make informed financial decisions, thereby setting them up for success in their adult lives.

Additional Legislative Actions and Economic Support Measures

Alongside these pivotal bills, Governor Evers addressed a variety of other legislative needs including the reform of alcohol regulation laws under Wisconsin Act 73, which grants the Department of Revenue increased authority over alcohol, tobacco, and lottery enforcement. This act is part of a broader effort to support local breweries, wineries, and distilleries, and align state regulations with industry growth and consumer protection. These legislative actions collectively aim to enhance the safety, education, and economic environment of Wisconsin, demonstrating a strong commitment to the state’s developmental and protective measures.
