To address this, the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Kappa Pi Omega chapter in Dothan, are organizing a financial literacy event on February 24 at 10 a.m. The event, titled “Sweet Savings Brunch,” aims to enhance economic wealth in the Wiregrass area. This inaugural financial literacy program complements the organization’s extensive efforts in family empowerment, economic wealth building, environmental enhancement, social justice advocacy, and community upliftment.

James Pruitt, notable for being the first black football player at G.W. Long High School and one of the earliest hotline linemen at Pea River Electric Cooperative, brings a wealth of experience. Despite facing racial discrimination in securing farm loans, his perseverance earned him the title of Smallest Black Farmer of the Year in 2011. Pruitt’s personal journey underscores the importance of resilience and strategic financial planning.
Insights from Jayla Scott and Desmond Douglas
Financial coach Jayla Scott will share her experience with wedding planning and engage participants in a finance game. Emphasizing budgeting, Scott believes in the power of sticking to a financial plan to achieve savings goals. Desmond Douglas will offer tips from his book “In God We Trust: A Bible Study About Money,” and discuss investment basics. Douglas stresses the necessity of saving money and establishing an emergency fund.
