DeFoor Announces Reelection Bid

Pennsylvania Auditor General Tim DeFoor has announced his candidacy for a second term. “As Auditor General, I’ve fulfilled my commitment to execute the role impartially, devoid of political bias,” DeFoor stated in a press release on Tuesday. He highlighted the incorporation of advanced technology to streamline auditing processes and the adoption of a risk-based approach to enhance efficiency.

Achievements and Background

The Auditor General’s office acts as the state’s fiscal watchdog, ensuring legal and proper expenditure of state funds through rigorous audits. DeFoor, who won the office in 2020 by defeating Democrat Nina Ahmad, has focused on improving the office in a non-partisan manner, emphasizing audits for schools and promoting financial literacy. His victory marked a historic moment as he became the first person of color to win a statewide office in Pennsylvania.

DeFoor’s public service career began in 2015 when he was elected Dauphin County Controller, a position he held for two terms before becoming Auditor General. With over 30 years of experience, including roles as a Special Investigator and Special Agent, DeFoor brings extensive expertise to the position. His 2020 election success was notable as he won more counties than any other statewide candidate, despite the high GOP turnout for then-President Donald Trump.

Path to Reelection

Endorsed by the Pennsylvania Republican Party, DeFoor appears to face no significant challengers within his party for the upcoming election. “My first term was dedicated to transformation and improvement; the next term will focus on ensuring we get the job done,” DeFoor asserted, expressing his commitment to continuing his work for Pennsylvania taxpayers.

On the Democratic side, State Representatives Malcolm Kenyatta and Mark Rozzi are competing for their party’s nomination. The Pennsylvania Democratic Party will hold its endorsement meeting in mid-December, setting the stage for a competitive race.
