OneUnited Bank’s Commitment to Youth Financial Literacy

In alignment with National Financial Literacy Month, OneUnited Bank, a prominent Black-owned banking institution, proudly unveils its 14th annual “I Got Bank” contest. This initiative aims to fortify financial literacy among youth, offering ten lucky participants a $1,000 savings account each. To complement this contest, OneUnited is also providing a free “I Got Bank” E-Guide, further supporting the bank’s commitment to fostering financial understanding from an early age.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Economists

Young learners aged 8 to 12 are invited to partake in this enriching financial literacy challenge by submitting a book report, a brief 250-word essay, or a creative art piece that depicts their application of financial concepts in daily life. All entries must be submitted by June 28, 2024, either via email or traditional mail. Winners will be announced on August 31, 2024, each receiving a $1,000 savings account to jumpstart their financial journey. Interested participants can find more details and submit their entries by visiting oneunited.com/book.

A Legacy of Financial Education

Teri Williams, President of OneUnited Bank and author of “I Got Bank!”, was inspired to create the book “What My Granddad Taught Me About Money” due to the absence of financial education resources aimed at urban youth. Williams emphasizes the critical importance of financial literacy, especially in the current economic climate affected by inflation. She advocates for financial education to be integrated into K-12 curricums nationwide, ensuring that young individuals understand the fundamentals of managing finances, investing, homeownership, and entrepreneurship from an early age. Last year’s contest saw a diverse group of young financial enthusiasts from across the country, demonstrating their financial knowledge and creativity.
