PenFed Credit Union and EVERFI from Blackbaud hosted an engaging learning event focused on improving financial education for over 110 students in grades 9-12 at Escuela Superior Rafael Cordero Molina in San Juan, Puerto Rico on March 20. The students recently completed the “Tu Dinero, Tu Sueño” (“Your Money, Your Dreams”) program, a scalable digital financial education curriculum provided by PenFed through a strategic partnership with EVERFI, the leader in powering social impact through education.
According to PenFed Executive Vice President of Member Operations and Global Fixed Assets, “PenFed believes that the best way to serve Puerto Rico is to continue to empower the next generation to achieve their financial goals.” We are grateful for the support of EVERFI and Escuela Superior Rafael Cordero Molina as we promote economic education and inspire students to build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
Over 4,000 public and private K-12 school pupils in 39 Puerto Rican locations are receiving important financial instruction from PenFed and EVERFI in a strategic partnership that has been ongoing for the past five years, free of charge. Individuals at PenFed have access to EVERFI’s proven curriculum that teaches them how to make wise financial decisions and achieve success in life. The program teaches kids about savings and budgeting, building and maintaining good credit, planning for major purchases, investing and retirement, and funding higher education.
PenFed leaders, including PenFed financial facility managers, money managers, and mortgage professionals, participated in a “speed networking” activity with students who had just completed the EVERFI financial education program. In small group discussions that incorporated the essential skills taught in the curriculum, students had the opportunity to ask questions of PenFed leaders and community volunteers.
This event marks the third time this year that PenFed and EVERFI have held a financial literacy event in Puerto Rico. Previously, PenFed has conducted activities at both public and private schools in San Juan.
Following these activities, PenFed announced that two students were awarded a scholarship in the amount of $1,250 in recognition of their work throughout the Tu Dinero, Tu Sueño program.
“PenFed has made a long-term investment in improving the financial literacy of students in Puerto Rico,” said EVERFI from Blackbaud Co-Founder and President, Ray Martinez. The San Juan students who participated in this program are very talented, and the stories they shared about the social impact they wanted to have were truly inspiring. We are pleased to partner with PenFed to provide this knowledge to such deserving students and to help them achieve their goals.
With locations in San Juan, Hatillo, Ponce, Mayaguez, and United States Army Garrison Fort Buchanan, PenFed now serves its members in Puerto Rico. In Guaynabo, PenFed opened a full-service center in 2022.
