Celebrating Leadership at the University of Memphis Homecoming
During the homecoming game at Liberty Bowl Stadium, the University of Memphis unveiled the winners of the prestigious Mr. & Ms. University of Memphis titles, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. Senior civil engineering major Anthony Miles was named Mr. U of M, while senior nursing major Kourtney Pryor earned the title of Ms. U of M. These honors, sponsored by the Student Government Association, recognize students who exemplify leadership and dedication to fostering progress within the U of M community.
Anthony Miles: A Visionary Leader
“While many consider it just a name, I consider it another way to help and be of change,” said Miles, reflecting on the significance of his new title. Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Miles is a dynamic community leader who serves as president of the Empowered Men of Color organization and co-director of the Alternative Break Experience, a service immersion trip. Alongside his academic pursuits, he is involved in real estate and aspires to a career in construction-based engineering post-graduation.
As Mr. U of M, one of Miles’ key initiatives is the “Invest in Your Future” plan, aimed at empowering the University of Memphis community. “It is a platform geared towards providing students with the necessary information to be successful, not only now, but in their future.” The plan includes practical advice on building credit scores, reducing debt, and understanding scholarships and loans, inspired by his awareness of the financial struggles many students face. A 2019 poll by College Pulse revealed that 35% of college students were not confident in managing their finances, with 64% only somewhat confident. Miles’s commitment to addressing this issue showcases his dedication to making a positive impact on campus.
Kourtney Pryor: A Dedicated Advocate for Student Engagement
Kourtney Pryor, the newly crowned Ms. University of Memphis for 2023, expressed a mix of “disbelief, but thankfulness immediately after,” upon hearing her name announced for the eminent title. A Memphis native, Pryor consistently displays impactful leadership as she generates positive contributions to the U of M community.
Pryor has served as a Frosh Camp counselor for two years, demonstrating her commitment to student engagement and earning her the position of Director of Counselor Development for Fall 2023. Additionally, she serves as an ambassador for the Tiger Elite program, reflecting her passion for fostering student growth and development. One of her key initiatives is PACE (Purposely Achieving Cornerstone Experiences), designed to help students connect with peers, prepare for post-grad life, and remind them they are not alone in their college journey.
Another initiative close to Pryor’s heart is “Grit and Grind with Gratitude,” which encourages students to write notes of gratitude, kindness, and encouragement to their peers. “I’m super excited about this one because it will engage and affect students who may never come into the inner workings of campus where most students are,” Pryor said. Her dedication to spreading positivity and building a supportive community is evident in her efforts to create meaningful connections and provide insights and affirmations for students’ plans and goals.
A Bright Future for the University of Memphis
As the newly crowned Mr. and Ms. University of Memphis, Anthony Miles and Kourtney Pryor are dedicated to enhancing the well-being and interests of the student body. Their leadership promises to bring valuable opportunities for financial literacy and foster meaningful connections within the community. Under their guidance, students can look forward to a supportive and enriching environment that empowers them to succeed both during and after their time at the University of Memphis.
